THOU ART THE REASON WHEREFORE

Will 01

For the sweetest of all Muses

Thou art my morning lark that waketh
My sleepy thoughts with sweetest song;
The morning dew that gently maketh
This weary old heart still beat so long;
Thou art air and the warm sun that giveth
Light and Life, Hope and Love so strong!

POETRY AT THE PUBLIC HOUSE

To Laura

The room is full of people, lovely people,
who seem to hang from every word we say.
The air is full of verse, or sometimes music,
and impregnated with a sense of spell.

Our time appears suspended for an evening,
while English words of rivers freely flow,
then turn into Italian, down new rivers;
but you, you waft away over the Thames.

I find it hard to concentrate on doing
what I am, after all, here to do (my poetry)
while you, a Muse, are sitting here, so close,
beautiful, as ever – magnificent and more!

AIRPORT APPARITION

You wear flowers
with the very same
elegant nonchalance
with which I may
wear any plain, dull,
boring piece of clothing.
Impossible not to
notice you, so lovely,
yet so modest that
a photograph may
depict you only partially
– you had no notice of
this photo opportunity.
And yet you really are
as beautiful as any film
star I have seen, who
was so full of being
herself! And then you
you disappear, as quickly
as you had suddenly
turned up, taking with you,
once more, beautiful roses.
Perhaps a piece of me, as well …

LISA DAGLI OCCHI BLU / MY BLUE-EYED LISA

LISA DAGLI OCCHI BLU

Capita, di tanto in tanto, che una donna
confonda piacevolmente i miei pensieri
e io mi trovi a fotografare una luna
sopra un mare risolutamente sereno.

Ti aspettavo, senza nemmeno saperlo,
da molto tempo e adesso, all’improvviso,
sei arrivata, senza né annunci né trombe,
a scompigliare l’ordine sparso dei sogni.

MY BLUE-EYED LISA

It happens, now and then, that a woman
pleasantly confuses all my thoughts,
and I end up photographing a moon
over a sea that is resolutely serene.

Unawares, I had been waiting for you
for a long time, and suddenly now
you turn up, without warning or fanfares,
to upset the random order of my dreams.
