SERVUS SUM! (Or: UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS)

For ‘Gez’

 

I don’t want to bore you with the usual silly words
– lovely, gorgeous, stunning, beautiful, etc. etc. –
but every time I see you I do simply forget again
all serious promises I made myself just yesterday.
And, if you speak so softly and look at me like that,
or if, worse still, stretch out your hand to touch me
(or even only feel the fabric of that shirt you like so),
do you think it possible for me not to dream of you?
Unless I should still manage to keep some self-control,
id est not lose it all, remembering that you – domina es!

SCHIZZO DI UN ESTUARIO

C’è maretta di nuovo stasera,
e una luna che sembra beffarsi
dei miei desideri immodesti.
Con famiglie di cigni sul fiume,
croccanti conchiglie che ora,
nel silenzio, ripetono passi
e un grande viavai di impavide
e antiche barchette da pesca,
tutto farebbe di certo pensare
a bucoliche scene sinfoniche.
C’è qualcosa però che non torna,
a parte i mille ricordi che invece
ritornano sempre: sono i conti
che da tempo non tornano più,
quelli importanti, somme di Vita.
E poi ci sei tu e non saprei dove
collocarti in questo quasipresepio,
istantaneo quadretto fluvio-marittimo
che il vento sospende tra nuvole e mare.
