Garden of England

For Diana Maria

An old and wiry little lady
insists on standing on the blue bus.

Diana pours the Southern Comfort,
the piano cries a strange rendition

of One Enchanted Evening, also
My Fair Lady and As Time Goes By.

Magpies and sparrows in the garden,
two blackbirds and a red woodpecker,

wood pigeons, two squirrels and a jay,
seven crows that hop around the grass.

But, when suddenly the fox appears,
the lawn becomes a grassy desert!
