‘AFFAIRE DE COEUR’

To a great Lady

I came to you with hopes of better things.
You were not young by any means, then,
yet had – you told me – other lovers, but
then I thought this would not bother me.
As long, of course, as I could have you too…
When walking down the streets with you
or sitting by the river (any place was good)
I once used to think that I was really happy.
I fell in love with you, utterly, completely:
the buses and the barges, the clean and dirty
streets that had become familiar, part of me.
And when I thought I knew you, there was,
suddenly, quite another, different, new you.
Do I still love you now? Who knows, only
time will tell, I am, right now, rather confused,
as I am leaving you – but not because of you.
One day, when very old, I’ll probably be telling
my grandchildren (some of whom know you
pretty well) about you, our love affair, that once
I lived with you, with London – a great Lady!

SERVUS SUM! (Or: UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS)

For ‘Gez’

I don’t want to bore you with the usual silly words
– lovely, gorgeous, stunning, beautiful, etc. etc. –
but every time I see you I do simply forget again
all serious promises I made myself just yesterday.
And, if you speak so softly and look at me like that,
or if, worse still, stretch out your hand to touch me
(or even only feel the fabric of that shirt you like so),
do you think it possible for me not to dream of you?
Unless I should still manage to keep some self-control,
id est not lose it all, remembering that you – domina es!

MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER, YOU

For Sarah

If I should know something about
you – however little – would almost
surely shatter the enchantment of
these few precious miles the train’s
devouring all too miserably quickly.
If I then should venture to conjecture,
I’d say you were a dancer, ballerina,
one of those tough yet very delicate
creatures who would literally waft
along our street, Vicarage Crescent,
SW11, back in the distant Eighties,
when life still was relatively normal.

FIRST DAYS OF YET ANOTHER NEW YEAR (WITHOUT YOU)

For my own blue-eyed Lisa

And now I can no longer like that sea
that envied you the colour of your eyes,
that jealous sea that would have liked
to be in my place, to keep you for itself.

For, everywhere I look, I see you eyes:
in patches of sky between the yellow
ginkgo biloba leaves, the last of winter;
among the fluffy clouds of early mornings;

below first hints of evenings far too early,
or over lightly-frosted sleeping grasses,
where not too high above the kestrel hovers,
having spotted tasty rewards for patience.

So I prefer to walk on beds of quiet rivers
that have never borne your tender steps,
nor should ever know of your existence.
Yet, even there, I clearly feel your presence!
