To a great Lady<\/em> <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I came to you with hopes of better things.
\nYou were not young by any means, then,
\nyet had \u2013 you told me \u2013 other lovers, but
\nthen I thought this would not bother me.
\nAs long, of course, as I could have you too…
\nWhen walking down the streets with you
\nor sitting by the river (any place was good)
\nI once used to think that I was really happy.
\nI fell in love with you, utterly, completely:
\nthe buses and the barges, the clean and dirty
\nstreets that had become familiar, part of me.
\nAnd when I thought I knew you, there was,
\nsuddenly, quite another, different, new you.
\nDo I still love you now? Who knows, only
\ntime will tell, I am, right now, rather confused,
\nas I am leaving you \u2013 but not because of you.
\nOne day, when very old, I\u2019ll probably be telling
\nmy grandchildren (some of whom know you
\npretty well) about you, our love affair, that once
\nI lived with you \u2013 with London, a great Lady! <\/p>\n
